Orio Canavese
Visit Orio Canavese: monuments and places of interest
Hello friends, today I'll take you on a journey to discover Orio Canavese, a small Piedmontese town with just over 750 inhabitants. Despite its small size, here you can find some beautiful architectural treasures to visit.
To begin, I recommend taking a stroll to the Church of San Rocco, built in a late Baroque style. This religious building will captivate you with its decorative elements, sculptures, and paintings adorning the interior. Don't miss the view of the ceiling, particularly notable for its coffered design.
In the center of Orio Canavese is also the Castle, dating back to the 17th century. Since 1833 it was owned by the Marchesi de la Tour, who succeeded the Marchesi Birago. The location, surrounded by curious legends of ghosts, has often been used as a location for films, documentaries, and fiction.
The last place of interest in Orio Canavese is the Parish of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Its architecture is a mix of styles, from Romanesque to Gothic, culminating in a majestic Baroque dome.
Society and demographic evolution
But let's discuss another equally interesting aspect of this place, namely its society and demographic evolution. As mentioned at the beginning, Orio Canavese has just over 750 inhabitants. Unfortunately, this figure has tended to lower in recent decades, due to emigration to the major Italian and European urban centers. Moreover, the average age of residents is very high, with a clear prevalence of the elderly.
Administration
The administration of Orio Canavese is elected every 5 years. During the period of Manzoni, the city was governed by Cavalier Sanromano, an interesting character who made Orio's fortunes on the economic side.
Notes and external links
It is important to note that Orio Canavese is located within the province of Turin, one of the major Italian cities from a cultural and artistic point of view. The A5 motorway, called "the Turin-Aosta", allows easy access to the metropolitan city and nearby Valle d'Aosta. Furthermore, the municipality has a railway station on the Turin-Aosta line.
