Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Orèro, an Italian municipality located in the Fontanabuona valley, in the province of Genoa, in Liguria. This beautiful town is inhabited by only 499 people and the town hall is located in the center of Isolona.
A mountainous territory
The municipal territory of Orèro is located in a mountainous area, ranging from the Isolona channel to the valley of the Malvaro stream. In addition to the gentle and beautiful landscapes, among the peaks of the territory you can admire Mount Ramaceto, 1345 meters high, Mount Zuccarello, which reaches 771 meters, Mount Bello, with its 718 meters, and Mount Panigaro, 682 meters high.
A millennial history
Orèro has a history that dates back to the Roman Empire, when the village stood on one of the branches of the famous "salt road", a route heavily used by mule drivers who carried salt from the Ligurian coast salt pans to the Piedmont capital under the Abbey of San Colombano already in Lombard times.
But Orèro has been able to evolve and survive even after the fall of the Roman Empire. In fact, the birth and construction of more convenient roads led to the decline of territorial urban planning, which was solved thanks to the exploitation of slate quarries. Even today, Orèro is among the most important places for slate extraction at the district and regional level.
The first official mention of Orero dates back to 1059 in a notarial act of the Archdiocese of Genoa, which granted some lands adjacent to the village. In the twelfth century, Orèro became a fiefdom of the Fieschi family and subsequently came under the government of the Republic of Genoa, which subjected it to the podesteria of Rapallo (within the "quarter" of Oltremonte, comprising the middle Fontanabuona valley) which was part of the captaincy of Chiavari. In the fifteenth century, there were fights between the supporters of the Fieschi, Fregoso, Adorno and Doria families on its territory. From 1608, it was incorporated into the newly established Rapallo captaincy.
In 1797, during the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte, Orèro was part of the department of the Gulf of Tigullio, with Rapallo as the capital, within the Ligurian Republic. In 1815, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia, according to the decisions of the Congress of Vienna of 1814, which placed the municipality of Orero in the province of Chiavari under the division of Genoa.
From 1859 to 1926, the territory of Orero was included in the VI district of Cicagna in the district of Chiavari in the then Province of Genoa, in the Kingdom of Italy.
