In this article, we will delve into the geography and history of Orero.

Physical geography

The municipal territory of Orero is very interesting from a geographical point of view. It is located in the Fontanabuona valley, between the Isolona channel and the Malvaro stream valley. The peaks of the territory include Mount Ramaceto (1345 m), Mount Zuccarello (771 m), Mount Bello (718 m), and Mount Panigaro (682 m). The mountains and streams present in the scenery create a landscape with fresh and clean air, rich in natural beauty.

Orero: a jewel of Liguria between mountains and history.

History

Orero dates back to the Roman Empire and boasts a long history that can still be seen today thanks to the numerous testimonies of the past. In fact, the village was built on one of the branches of the "Via di Piacenza", which was frequented by mule drivers who went from the Salinas of the Ligurian coast to the city of Piacenza and were dependent on the Abbey of San Colombano since the period of Lombard domination.

The slate quarries were one of the main economic elements of the commune, but also the wars between the noble families of the area contributed to the formation of the history of Orero. The village became an ancient fiefdom of the Fieschi and from the twelfth century was subjected to the Republic of Genoa. In the fifteenth century, there were bloody struggles between local noble families, in particular the partisans of the Fieschi family, the Fregoso, the Adorno, and the Doria. In 1608, Orero was incorporated into the newly established Rapallo captaincy.

During the French domination of Napoleon Bonaparte (1797), Orero became part of the Golfo del Tigullio department, with Rapallo as its capital, within the Ligurian Republic from December 2nd. In 1803 it became the main center of the II canton of the Gulf of Tigullio in the Entella Jurisdiction. In 1815 it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Sardinia, according to the decisions of the Vienna Congress of 1814, which subjected the municipality of Orero to the province of Chiavari under the division of Genoa.

Conclusion

Orero is a pleasant and picturesque small commune, situated in a privileged position. With its history rich in events and the natural wonders of the territory, it represents an ideal destination for a day trip or a long vacation. The inhabitants of the commune will welcome you with their kindness and their desire to showcase the best of their territory. If you want to discover this corner of Liguria, Orero is definitely the right place to do so!
