A brief history of Talamone

Talamone has a long and fascinating history. Already in Etruscan times it was a thriving city, which saw a decisive Battle of Talamone between Romans and Celts marching towards Rome in 225 BC. Since remote times it was known by the Etruscans as ''Tlamun'', by the Latins as ''Talamo'', and even before, by the Greeks, as ''Telamòn'' (Θηλαμών) or ''Thalamòn'' (Θαλαμών). After being razed to the ground by Lucio Cornelio Silla for the support given by its citizens to Gaius Marius in his attempt to march against Rome, the city was repopulated by the Aldobrandeschi in the early Middle Ages. These built the imposing fortress during the thirteenth century. During its history, Talamone passed under the domination of the Republic of Siena and then to Spain, becoming part of the State of the Garrisons. The city suffered a great depopulation due to the unhealthy conditions of the Maremma and malaria, despite some attempts to recover the fortifications of the village. During the eighteenth century, Talamone slowly began to revive. In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi and his Expedition of the Thousand stopped in Talamone to stock up on water and weapons and to land three hundred and thirteen republican Garibaldines. Today Talamone has become a renowned seaside resort of the Costa d'Argento.
