Physical geography
Albinia is situated in Maremma Grossetana, near the Tyrrhenian Sea, and its location is truly unique. In fact, it is located at the end of the Giannella tombolo, a strip of land that connects the mainland with the Argentario promontory. Located about 30 km from Grosseto and just over 10 km from the municipal capital of Orbetello, Albinia has a breathtaking view of the sea.
History
Did you know that Albinia has ancient roots? In fact, a first inhabited center called "Alminia" was mentioned in the Itinerarium Antonini, an ancient travel guide from the Roman era. In 1977, the archaeologist D.P.S Peacock discovered a center for the production of Roman amphorae near the current settlement. And from that moment on, many archaeological researches have been conducted in the area between Albinia, Forte delle Saline, and the mouth of the river Albegna, allowing the discovery of a port center and several workshops dedicated to the production of amphorae.
But Albinia was also the center of more recent historical events. The modern settlement was born in the years of fascism as a consequence of a territorial planning intervention that included the reclamation of the Albegna river marshes. In those years, the territory was reorganized into farms and the village was populated by immigrants from other provinces and neighboring regions, becoming a service center for a vast rural area.
Albinia today
Today, Albinia is a hamlet full of life and history, with a population of over 3000 inhabitants. Despite its modern development, the atmosphere of a bygone era can still be felt. In 1957, the parish church was consecrated, a building that represents one of the symbols of Albinia. In addition, in the 1950s, the railway station and the silo of the provincial agricultural consortium were built and are still present within the settlement.
But Albinia is also a hamlet blessed by nature and the sea. The proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea allows you to enjoy long beaches and crystal clear waters, ideal for summer holidays. Furthermore, the settlement is surrounded by natural reserves, such as the Duna Feniglia Nature Reserve, which makes it an excellent destination for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
The flood of 2012
In 2012, Albinia was hit by the tragic flood of Maremma Grossetana, which caused extensive damage to the settlement and local economic activities. However, thanks to the commitment of the population and the authorities, the hamlet managed to recover and rebuild itself, demonstrating its strength and community spirit.
