Chignolo D'oneta
Discovering Chignolo: a small mountain village
Hello everyone! Today I'll be talking about Chignolo, a small village nestled in the valley of Riso, part of the municipality of Oneta. The village is characterized by stone houses, narrow alleys, and many picturesque corners where you can take a pleasant stroll.
Its history
Legend has it that Chignolo was born in the thirteenth century thanks to four families of shepherds who brought their livestock here to graze. Slowly but surely, these families built the first shacks and then the houses. The village was a fundamental stop for those who crossed the Riso valley for a long time, especially for those heading from Bondo, a hamlet of the nearby municipality Colzate. In the seventeenth century, the church of San Bartolomeo was built, completed in 1630 but elevated to parish only in 1738. Today, this sacred building is an almost obligatory stop for visitors to the village.
Curiosities
Did you know that Chignolo has its own anthem? The music was composed by Albino Poli, while the words were written by G.B. Borlini. This song is a real declaration of love for the mountain village.
Places of interest
The church of San Bartolomeo is undoubtedly one of the main places of interest in Chignolo. It is dedicated to Bartholomew, one of the twelve apostles, and was built in 1472. The interior is rich in decorations and frescoes, while the stone façade stands out outside.
Excursions
If you love nature and outdoor walks, from Chignolo you can start exploring the surroundings. A pleasant walk will take you to the hamlet of Bondo, belonging to the municipality of Colzate. Here you can admire the church of San Giovanni Battista, dating back to the fifteenth century. Alternatively, you can visit the sanctuary of Madonna del Frassino, located about two kilometers from the inhabited center of Oneta.
