Physical geography and climate

Omignano: history, monuments and nature at the heart of Cilento.

History and monuments

The history of Omignano dates back to 1047, during the time of the Lombards. The origin of the name is still a subject of debate among scholars, but there are two main theories: the first suggests that it derives from medieval Latin "dominicanus", while the second traces it back to an Etruscan name ("Umenia").

Despite its small size, Omignano boasts some monuments of great interest. Among these are the 17th century Palazzo De Feo, the residence of the Mazzacane princes, the Palazzo Gorga, the San Nicola di Bari parish (dating back to the 16th century) and the Sant'Antonio da Padova parish (in the Scalo fraction). Moreover, you can visit Monte Stella, a nature reserve that is part of UNESCO.

Events and festivals

The most important festival in Omignano takes place on the first Sunday of July in honor of the Madonna del Rosario. This is a very important event for the local community, who come together in prayer and celebration for the Holy Virgin.

Infrastructure and transport

Omignano is easily accessible thanks to the Statale 18 Tirrena Inferiore and the Provincial Roads 15/b, 274 and 430/a. If you decide to visit the municipality by car, you won't have to worry about parking, as there are ample spaces available.

Administration

The territory of Omignano is part of the Alento-Monte Stella Mountain Community and the Union of Alento Valley Municipalities. Competences in the field of soil defense are delegated to the regional basin authority Sinistra Sele.

We hope to have piqued your curiosity with this brief excursion into the town of Omignano. If you're looking for a peaceful place to unwind from the frenzy of the city, this small municipality in the province of Salerno might be the right fit for you!
