Olmo Gentile
Olmo Gentile: a small yet picturesque municipality
If you're looking for a peaceful municipality surrounded by nature, Olmo Gentile is the place for you. Located in the province of Asti in Piedmont, this village has a population of only 71 inhabitants, which means you'll be far from the chaos of large cities. Some of the largest trees in the area, including Corylus avellana and Castagno, can also be found here.
Physical geography
Olmo Gentile extends just north of Bric Puschera, the highest peak in the province of Asti. The town is crossed by the Tatorba d'Olmo stream, a tributary of the Bormida di Millesimo.
History
The name of the village probably derives from the presence of the Ulmus tree, which was planted near sacred places to protect and bless the area. Olmo Gentile has an ancient history that dates back to 1142, when it appeared in a testamentary document. After passing through many hands, becoming a possession first of the Scarampi family and then of the Del Carretto and finally the Savoy family, the village was attacked during the War of the Mantuan and Monferrato Succession.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the Municipality of Olmo Gentile, granted in 2007, is characterized by a yellow banner edged in red.
Monuments and places of interest
Despite the historical events it has undergone, Olmo Gentile preserves some interesting monuments. Among these, the castle and the tower from the 12th century, which has been renovated several times over the centuries. Near the castle is also the parish church of San Martino, which, although of late-Renaissance origin, has been modified over time.
