Olmedo
Olmedo: a town amongst Sardinian hills
Olmedo (also known as "S'Ulumedu" in Sardinian and "Urumeddu" in Sassarese) is a small town with approximately 4,161 inhabitants, located in the province of Sassari in Sardinia. It spans an area of approximately 34 square kilometers, nestled amongst hilly terrain at the foot of Mount Rosso, about 69 meters above sea level.
An ancient history rich in events
The territory of Olmedo has been inhabited since the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods. By the thirteenth century, the town was already an important administrative center as evidenced by the religious register of the Condaghe di Silki. In the fourteenth century, it became involved in wars and territorial disputes, suffering damage and looting, such as that suffered by the village in 1540 from the Saracens. However, the reconstruction of the town was rapid, and it was repopulated. In 1603, Olmedo counted only nine hearths, or about forty inhabitants, but thanks to the Amat family, the town found new life and began to grow demographically. In 1859, it became part of the province of Sassari.
Olmedo today: a growing community
In recent years, the town of Olmedo has been undergoing a period of intense building development, thanks to the influx of families from the major cities of the region, such as Sassari and Alghero. The inhabitants hold their community dear and work hard to make it a welcoming and attractive place for anyone who wishes to settle there.
The coat of arms and flag of the town
The town of Olmedo was granted its coat of arms and flag in 1993, by decree of the President of the Republic. These symbols represent the history of the town, with a blue background representing the sky and sea surrounding Sardinia, and the three towers recalling its medieval past. In addition, the coat of arms contains a symbolic representation of an olive tree, which gave rise to the name of the town.
Conclusions
Olmedo is a town with an ancient history and a community that is working to ensure its future. Located amongst the hills of Sardinia, the town is an ideal place for those who wish to enjoy the tranquility of nature and the proximity to the major cities of the region. With its medieval past and constantly evolving present, Olmedo is a place worth visiting and discovering.
