Oliena: among mountains, history and culture.

History

The first human settlement in Oliena dates back to Roman times, but there are traces of man from the Paleolithic period. In particular, numerous findings have occurred in the valley of Lanaitto and the surrounding areas of the current town.

The village seems to have been born from the union of minor tribes and developed thanks to its safer position against invaders, by now penetrating into Barbagia. During the Middle Ages, Oliena and other centers were included by the Gallurese sovereign and were part of the Galtellì Bishopric.

The village underwent the introduction of new crops during the period when it belonged to Pisa, leaving an indelible mark in the history of local agriculture.

Curiosities

Oliena preserves the traces of its history in many points of the city. The spring of Su Gologone is a source where people believed there was a goddess who gave water to the village. It was also believed that if the spring dried up, it would have been a sign of the end of the world.

In addition, Oliena is famous for its carasau bread, a typical Sardinian bread that is baked twice and can be stored for a long time. You cannot talk about Oliena without mentioning the Cannonau wine, an essence of Sardinia.

Conclusions

Oliena is a place not to be missed if you decide to visit Sardinia. Its territory and history will leave you speechless. The natural beauties and cultural richness make this place one of the most fascinating in Sardinia. Do not miss the opportunity to visit Oliena!
