Etymology
The toponym "Olgiate" would derive from the Celtic term "olca", which indicates a flat area subject to plowing. The current name of the municipality, added later, is "Molgora", referring to the river that crosses the territory.
History
The history of Olgiate Molgora dates back to ancient times: the territory was inhabited since antiquity and there are several Roman and early medieval testimonies preserved, including a beautiful Roman altar of unknown origin and the famous funerary inscription of Alachis## Aldone and Grausone, Lombard nobles buried here around 700 and mentioned by Paul the Deacon in his "Historia Langobardorum".
Beolco was one of the main early medieval centers in Brianza and became the site of a private canonry, perhaps founded by Ferlinda, wife of the last count of Lecco. Other ancient centers of the municipality are Pianezzo and Porchera, both of Roman origins, Olgiate Vecchio (current Villa Sommi Picenardi) and Borlengo (near S. Zeno), nuclei of probable Lombard or Frankish origin.
During the late Middle Ages, inhabited centers such as Mondonico or Olcellera also developed, with the function of agricultural colonization of marshy territories. Some settlements were founded or developed by important monasteries; Porchera, for example, was enfeoffed to the Abbey of San Pietro al Monte in Civate, while Olcellera was subject to the Basilica of San Dionigi in Milan.
The richness of the history of Olgiate Molgora is reflected in the high number of hamlets and farms scattered throughout the municipal territory. Many of these nuclei had a peculiar history and urban development.
