History
Ogliastro Cilento has an ancient history, with the first historical attestations dating back to the year 1059. The etymology of the name "Ogliastro" has two possible origins: the first would derive from the name "Olliastrum," which in turn derives from the Greek word "aystron" (city) combined with the verb "òllymi" (to destroy). This hypothesis suggests that Ogliastro was built following the devastation of nearby Agropoli. The second hypothesis leads us to the Latin (medieval) noun “oleastrum”: at first glance, the reference to the olive appears more likely. Ogliastro was part of the feoff of Agropoli, which was owned by the Bishop of Paestum until 1556, when it was alienated to the Spigadore family. Since then, there have been numerous changes of ownership of the feoff, up to the Marquis de Stefano in 1741.
