Oggiono: a town between lake and hills

Oggiono is a small municipality in the province of Lecco, in Lombardy, with a population of just under 10,000 inhabitants. Located between Lake Annone and the moraine hills of Alta Brianza, the town offers a charming landscape with views of the Lecco mountains. The flat area of Oggiono is characterized by alluvial deposits, while the hilly area of Imberido, Castello and Trescano is of glacial origin with the presence of morainic ridges. Oggiono borders the municipalities of Annone di Brianza, Galbiate, Ello, Dolzago, Sirone and Molteno and is divided into two main nuclei: Oggiono center and Imberido, as well as numerous locations such as Bagnolo, Castello, Peslago and Trescano.

A brief historical overview

The first traces of human life in the Oggionese territory date back to the Middle Neolithic, around 5000 years ago, while the Bronze Age has left some military remains found on the road to Ello, including a helmet. In Roman times, there are traces of human settlements in the territory of Oggiono through tombs, coins, gravestones and an inscription dedicated to Mercury. The Oggiono parish, on the other hand, seems to date back to the Longobardic Era between 584 and 774 AD. Other signs of the Longobardic period are found in the toponymy of the town, such as the baptistery of San Giovanni Battista.

In the seventh century, the cult of Saint Euphemia of Chalcedon spread to Oggiono, while during the time of the Franks the town belonged to the County of Milan and was governed by a feudal lord. One of the "Captains of Oggiono" had the "Castellazzo" built, near where Villa Sironi stands today.
