Piavon

Piavon: a charming hamlet in Oderzo

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you about a beautiful hamlet in the province of Treviso: Piavon, located within the municipality of Oderzo.

Origins of the name

The name Piavon derives from the canal that runs through the hamlet. This watercourse, also called Piavon, was a branch of the Piave River until the Cucca Breach, when the canal was connected to the Lia River through the excavation of the Navisego canal.

History

The hamlet has a very ancient history. In fact, the first mention of the parish church dates back to 1391. In the past, Piavon was an autonomous municipality, but on June 1, 1929, it was suppressed and merged with Oderzo. However, the old cadastral code of the municipality, G578, is still present in the tax codes of people born here before the suppression.

Monuments and places of interest

The parish church of San Benedetto dates back to the fourteenth century and is very interesting from an artistic point of view. Inside the church there are four paintings by Jacopo da Bassano. In addition, the bell tower of the church dates back to 1587.

In Piavon there is also a very peculiar peasant dwelling, called "casone", with a thatched roof, dating back to about 400 years ago. It is located in Via Frassenè.

For food lovers, there is Ca' Lozzio, a famous restaurant-bar with numerous personal paintings and cultural exhibitions.

Until 2008, Piavon hosted the Guido Fregonese Beekeeping Museum, the first public beekeeping museum in Italy.

Society

The hamlet of Piavon has a long sporting tradition. In football, the inhabitants of the hamlet founded US Piavon, the local team with yellow and blue colors. Among the players of the team, we can mention Gianfranco Zigoni, former player of Inter and Hellas Verona, who contributed to the team's promotion from the third Category to the Second category.

In the past, a Speedway track was also present at Piavon's sports field, where numerous events were held. In addition, since 2017, HC Piavon, an emerging handball club, has been founded, which counts among its ranks the Italian beach handball champion Roberto Piccoli.

Events

Every year, in the second half of June, the "summer festival" takes place, a festival that replaces the parish festival.

Conclusions

In conclusion, Piavon is a very charming hamlet rich in history, monuments and places of interest. Moreover, the sporting tradition and the events that take place here make it an ideal destination for holidays. If you are looking for an authentic experience, I recommend visiting Piavon!
