Origins of the name
The name of the town comes from the Sardinian word "nughedu", which means "walnut" and refers to the walnut trees that once grew along the Lichitu river in the valley next to the village. In fact, until the early 20th century, Nughedu San Nicolò was surrounded by numerous walnut groves.
History
The territory of Nughedu San Nicolò was inhabited since the Nuragic period, as evidenced by the presence of a Nuraghe. Later, it belonged to the Judicate of Torres and was part of the Curatoria of Nughedu and later Monte Acuto. After the fall of the Judicate in 1259, Nughedu San Nicolò came under the dominion of noble Genoese and Tuscan families. In 1350 it was conquered by the Aragonese and in 1421 it was granted to the Centelles as a fief. In the 18th century it became part of the Duchy of Monte Acuto and finally in 1839, with the suppression of the feudal system, it became a free municipality.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the town depicts a red tower on a silver background, on which a walnut tree stands as a reference to the original name of the town. The banner is instead a white and red split flag.
