Noviglio

Welcome to Noviglio

Hello everyone, today we'll talk about Noviglio, a scattered municipality in the metropolitan city of Milan in Lombardy, with a population of around 4496. The territory of Noviglio has been inhabited by different cultures such as the Ligurians, Gauls, Latins, and Lombards.

History

The municipality is divided into different fractions that are far apart: Noviglio, Mairano (the seat of the municipality), Santa Corinna, Tainate, and various farms (Conigo, Tavernasco, Conago, Domenegasco, Copiago). Each fraction has its own church, a testimony to the ancient division of the territory.

Throughout its history, the town has gone through difficult periods, like the plague epidemic of 1630, followed by years of famine and poverty. However, Noviglio has managed to maintain its rural tradition, preserving some historical buildings and courtyard farms that have been kept intact over time thanks to their original structure. The agrarian past, characterized by farmers and rice farm workers, blends with the present, with the presence of modern farming equipment. In 1786, the municipality of Noviglio was included in the province of Pavia (Austrian Lombardy), while in 1870, the municipality of Tainate merged with it.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Noviglio has several places of interest, such as the expansion of the existing school complex inspired by Piet Mondrian's famous "Composition B" and intended for use as a cafeteria, refectory, and gym. The external cladding has been made with Corten steel, which incorporates the new building into the chromatic context of the South Milan Agricultural Park.

In addition, Noviglio hosts the Kartell Museum dedicated to the eponymous furniture-making company, founded in 1999 and reorganized in 2014, exhibiting over 1000 creations by designers and architects. To the east of the municipality, along the SP203 towards the Mairano fraction, is the old cemetery, no longer in use but still accessible.

Society

The town has seen significant population growth over the years. In 1751, it had only 140 inhabitants, and in 1771, there were 325, while in 1805, the population was 768. In 1811, with the temporary union with Tainate and Copiago, the population was 849, increasing to 890 after the annexation of Conigo in 1853. Currently, Noviglio has a population of around 4496.
