Welcome to Novi di Modena

Hello everyone! Today we will talk about Novi di Modena, a beautiful municipality in the province of Modena in Emilia-Romagna, located north of the capital. Here you can find the calm and tranquility of the lower Modena region, as well as the ancient history that characterizes this place.

The history of Novi di Modena

Novi di Modena has an ancient and fascinating history. The area was already settled in Roman times, while there is little evidence from the Early Middle Ages. In 848 the toponym of Vicolongo appears, an ancient medieval village that was fortified in 911. The first document that mentions a ''Castrum Nove'' dates back to the year 979. This castle was strengthened in the thirteenth century, given its strategic location on the border between the territories administered by the Este, Gonzaga, Pico, and Pio families, who often battled each other.

The castle of Novi underwent various attacks by noble families such as the Pio of Carpi and was razed to the ground in 1537 by Ercole I d'Este. The city of Novi di Modena enjoyed prosperity following the economic-cultural revival of the place. During the Renaissance, the cultivation of Oryza sativa was introduced and, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, there were major struggles due to the agricultural crisis, which led to the birth of cooperatives and unions of socialist or Catholic matrix.

During World War II, the Novi area was the scene of numerous actions of the Italian Resistance. The municipality of Novi di Modena was hit by the Emilia earthquakes of 2012.
