Noventa Vicentina

Welcome to Noventa Vicentina: a small Italian municipality

Dear friends, today I will talk to you about the Italian municipality of Noventa Vicentina, located in the province of Vicenza, in the Veneto region, in northeastern Italy. With a population of 8,939 inhabitants, Noventa Vicentina is the southernmost municipality of the province of Vicenza, just 33 km from the city of Vicenza and 37 km from Padua.

A brief geographical description

Noventa Vicentina: history, territory and climate.

The territory and its location

One of the distinctive features of the municipality of Noventa Vicentina is its flat territory, which extends a few kilometers from the Euganean Hills to the east and the Berici Hills to the northwest. The Frassine river, which marks the boundary between the province of Padua and that of Vicenza, flows south of the municipality.

The climate in Noventa Vicentina

The climate of Noventa Vicentina is generally mild, with average temperatures during the winter period of about 4-6°C and during the summer of about 25°C.

Origin of the name

The name of Noventa Vicentina derives from the Latin "nova entia", which means new lands, and recalls the reclamation work carried out after the disastrous floods of the Lombard age.

The history of Noventa Vicentina

Ancient times

In the territory of Noventa Vicentina, artifacts dating back to prehistoric times have been found, but it was during the Roman era that the territory was more densely populated.

Middle Ages

During the Middle Ages, the bishops of Vicenza owned significant properties in the area, including a bishop's castle in Noventa, one of the most important in the Lower Vicenza area, whose traces have unfortunately been lost. Despite the distance from Vicenza, the castle of Noventa was very robust and defended the bishops' properties from the threats of the lords of the neighboring municipalities of Este, Montagnana, and Lozzo Atestino.

The castle of Noventa was first mentioned in an imperial document dating back to the year 1000, in which it is listed as one of the castles exempt from fodro tax. One hundred years later, Henry IV of Franconia confirmed this privilege to Bishop Ezzelino.

It is likely that the castle of Noventa was originally a fortification of the ancient parish of Santa Maria, although the actual castle must have stood southwest of contrà Capovilla, at the borders with the territory of Pojana Maggiore, where the toponym "Castellazzo" still exists.

Conclusions

Noventa Vicentina is a municipality that boasts a millennia-old history and a flat territory, located between the Euganean Hills and the Berici Hills. The bishop's castle of Noventa, once one of the most important in the province of Vicenza, is now only a memory, but the municipality is also a welcoming place, full of opportunities and life. I invite you to visit this beautiful Italian locality, where you will find a hospitable community, a beautiful territory, and so much history to discover.
