Origin of the Name
The origin of the name Novedrate is uncertain, but it is thought to derive from an ancient personal name with the addition of the suffix "-ate" found in many municipalities in the area. According to another hypothesis, the name could derive from the term "maggese," which means a field that is cultivated for the first time.
History
Novedrate is a very ancient city, as evidenced by documents dating back to 1017. In that year, a Milanese priest named Landolfo ordered that a piece of land in the place called Novedrate be given for half to the church of Santa Maria and for the other half to various men in the area.
In the centuries that followed, the city was often the scene of power struggles and wars, as happened during the dispute between the peasants and Milanese nobles who took refuge in Cantù at the beginning of the 13th century. Over the centuries, Novedrate passed under various lords and in 1805 was annexed to the municipality of Carimate, but the decision was later revoked.
In 1928, the city was again merged with Carimate, but it regained its independence in 1950. The first elected mayor was Baron Rinaldo Casana, owner of the eponymous villa, who remained in office until 1973.
