Torrion Quartara

Il Torrion Quartara

Hello everyone! Today we are talking about a fraction of Novara called Torrion Quartara. This small inhabited center is ideal for those seeking the tranquility of the countryside without getting too far from the city. Here we find rice paddies and cornfields as far as the eye can see, perfect for a walk in contact with nature.

Origin of the name and curiosity

The name Torrion Quartara derives from an ancient tower dating back to the fourteenth century, which stood in the middle of the countryside. This tower was the scene of the Battle of Novara in 1849, when Piedmontese and Austrians clashed. From that moment on, the tower was used for other purposes, such as the headquarters of the "San Gaudenzio" episcopal seminary for the formation of Novara priests.

But that's not all! Torrion Quartara is also the headquarters of the G.S. Pro Calcio Torrion Quartara 1990, an amateur football team that plays in the provincial championship. In addition, the name Quartara has very ancient origins: in fact, when this area belonged to the bishop of Asti, the owner turned to a trusted person who paid the "Fourth" of the income from the cultivated land. From this indication came the current toponym.

Torrion Quartara: between nature and history.

Physical geography

Torrion Quartara is located south of Novara and is surrounded by fields and rice paddies. The territory is very flat, with some small hills at the border with the Bicocca district (Novara), which constitute the Arbogna Valley. This area is part of the "Novara - Vespolate fluvio-glacial terrace". In addition, Torrion Quartara is crossed by several watercourses including Agogna, Arbogna, Cavo Dassi, Cavo Prina (no longer in use today), and Cavo Canalino.

Notes

If you are passionate about history, Torrion Quartara is a place you cannot miss: the tower is indeed witness to one of the most important battles of the 19th century. If, on the other hand, you prefer nature, the flora and fauna of this area will leave you speechless!
