Nova Ponente

Nova Ponente: History, Symbols, and Monuments

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a beautiful place I recently visited: Nova Ponente, an Italian municipality with a population of around 4000 inhabitants, located in the autonomous province of Bolzano, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region.

Origins of the Name and History

But let's talk about the origins of this municipality! The name Nova Ponente comes from the Latin "nova" (recently cultivated land) and "teutonic" (German). The toponym has had various names over the centuries, from the Latin attestations in 1175 (Nova) and 1209 (Nova Teutonica), to the German documents of 1336 (Teuschennoeven, Teutschenofen) and 1411 (Tawtschenofen).

The settlement of Nova Ponente has medieval origins, and was founded during the time of Mainardo II of Tyrol-Gorizia, Count of Tyrol, who promoted colonization in the highlands of the area. Almost all the farmsteads present in the territory appear for the first time mentioned in a large census operated by the same sovereign in 1288. As early as 1434, the community of Nova Ponente acted as an autonomous political aggregation in a dispute over income maintenance with the noble Botsch family from Bolzano.

The trade in wood has always been one of the main sources of wealth in Nova Ponente. In 1614, for example, the wood provided by Tschufflerhof of Nova Ponente was used for the construction of the attic of the Cathedral of San Pietro in Bologna.

But let's now talk about the symbols of the municipality! The coat of arms of Nova Ponente, adopted in 1969, features the white color that symbolizes the dolomite deposits, the red that represents the quartziferous porphyry, and the branch that recalls the forested nature of the territory.
