Notaresco
Welcome to Notaresco: the Medieval Village
Notaresco is a small medieval village with a population of 6,262 inhabitants in the province of Teramo in Abruzzo, Italy. Our town is nestled on a hill and its urban structure is typical of a Medieval settlement, with thick walls and high and narrow windows. The city has existed for many centuries and the buildings document its presence since the early centuries of the Christian era.
The History of Notaresco
From the 14th century to 1757, Notaresco was under the dominion of the Acquaviva di Atri family. During World War II, the fascist regime established the Notaresco internment camp at Casa Mazzarosa and Casa Carusi. Foreign Jewish and stateless citizens were concentrated here, and from 1942, also Dalmatian and Istrian partisans. The concentration camp was closed in June 1944.
What to see in Notaresco
The village of Notaresco is rich in monuments and places of interest that are worth visiting. Here is a list of the most beautiful places to see during a visit:
San Clemente al Vomano Church: a religious building of Romanesque art with simple architectural features, known for its rich portal of the facade and for its beautiful ciborium, considered one of the oldest and most monumental in Abruzzo. The church, which was owned by the monks of the Order of Saint Benedict, belonged to the homonymous abbey complex founded in the 9th century, presumably by Ermengarda (daughter of Louis the Young), mother of the blind Emperor Louis.
"G. Romualdi" Archaeological Museum: a museum that contains archaeological finds from the territory of Notaresco dating back to prehistoric times: Neolithic period (9th millennium BC), protohistory, Bronze Age, Iron Age, up to the Italic and Roman period.
Remains of a rich Italic-Roman villa: located in Grasciano and it extends for about 3 hectares.
Substantial remains of a large center of wine, oil, and garum production: of the Italic-Roman period, in the Cesari plain, on the border of the municipality of Morro d'Oro.
Church and convent of Sant'Antonio Abate: from the 9th-10th centuries, with only the facade remaining visible inside the small current chapel.
Church of Saints Peter and Andrew: located in the historic center of Notaresco with a Baroque interior and traces of the first Romanesque church visible in the external facade garments, almost certainly from the 9th-10th centuries.
Acquaviva Palace dukes of Atri: currently the seat of the Municipality.
The "neviera": located in the historic center, in the Civitello area (prop. Candelori), visitable. It is probably a prehistoric refuge because two pre-Protohistoric stations were found in the immediate vicinity (former baronial palace of Casa Moretti and Casa Di Sabatino).
Carmine Church: of Romanesque structure and 16th-century interior, painted coffered ceiling of the 17th century (visitable). The adjoining building of the old prisons housed a small convent of nuns.
