Noci
Hi friends! Today I'm going to talk to you about the beautiful city of Noci, located in the stunning region of Puglia, Italy.
Physical Geography
Territory
Noci is located in a central position between the cities of Bari and Taranto on the hill of the Murgia Barese, at an altitude of 420 meters above sea level. Here in the Land of Trulli, you can admire the natural beauty of the forest heritage. Once the fragno, the only environmental resource of the territory, was cut down by the inhabitants dating back to the eighteenth century. Today, the fragno forests occupy 20% of the entire municipal area.
The municipal territory borders various municipalities including Putignano, Castellana Grotte, Gioia del Colle, Mottola, and Alberobello. In 1997, Italian regional law named the Barsento area as a "protected natural area of natural interest". This area includes Noci, as well as other surrounding municipalities.
Climate
Noci enjoys a Mediterranean climate thanks to its short distance from the two coasts, the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. The southeast Murgia Barese is defined as a "warm temperate" zone, although the average temperature of the coldest month is 6.5°C. During the summer, on the other hand, the climate is often hot and dry, but annual rainfall is about 720 millimeters.
History
The Norman origins
According to local historian Pietro Gioja (1801-1865), the city of Noci dates back to the second half of the 6th century. Captain Conone, on behalf of Emperor Justinian II, built a citadel of military character called "Castellum Nucum".
Noci has a very interesting history. Over the years it has been influenced by many different cultures, including the Normans and the Arabs. In 1740, the name of the municipality was changed from "Le Noci" to "Noci". This happened during the Bourbon period.
