In the Middle Ages, the village was founded near the castle of Castelguelfo, and the territory was assigned to the Cistercian monks of the Fontevivo Abbey in 1325.
The increase in the movement of goods and people along the Via Emilia led the Bourbon Dukes of Parma to organize a barge service and design a new bridge over the Taro. In 1816, Duchess Maria Luigia started the works that led to the construction of a brick bridge over the Taro, inaugurated in 1821. In the 20th century, the village developed considerably, but remained divided in two parts by the busy Via Emilia.

One of the main monuments of Ponte Taro is the bridge over the Taro river, built between 1816 and 1821 according to the design of engineer Antonio Cocconcelli, at the request of Duchess Maria Luigia.
