Physical Geography
Nocera Umbra has a climatic classification of zone E, 2318 GR/G. This means that during summer the maximum temperature fluctuates around 30 degrees Celsius, while in winter the minimum temperature reaches -5 degrees Celsius. The town is located near the Umbrian-Marchigian Apennine mountain range, which offers a beautiful panoramic view.
History
Throughout history, Nocera Umbra has been influenced by various peoples who inhabited it. Originally founded by the Camers (Camerino) and called "Noukria", meaning "The New One". Later, in Roman times, it was renamed "Nuceria Camellaria", thanks to its privileged position along the Via Flaminia. The Romans also built another important road, the "Septempedana", which passed through the villages of Dubios, Prolaqueum, and Septempeda, reaching Ancona.
For several generations, Nocera Umbra hosted a diocese and was the seat of a Gastaldo during the Lombard period. Over the centuries, Nocera Umbra has suffered numerous invasions and looting, such as that suffered by the Goths of Alaric in 410. In 571, it was occupied by the Lombards and became the seat of a Gastaldo. In the Middle Ages, the city was surrounded by towers and had a fortress on top of the hill, making it very difficult to conquer.
In 1248, Frederick II of Swabia set fire to the city due to its proximity to the Guelfs and, subsequently, in 1279, an earthquake destroyed much of the city. Rebuilt, it was ruled by the Lombard counts and, from the mid-15th century, was part of the Papal States until the Unification of Italy in 1860.
The Earthquake of 1997
In September 1997, an earthquake with its epicentre in the Colfiorito-Nocera area, measuring 6 on the Richter scale, almost completely destroyed the historic centre of the city. This caused the exodus of inhabitants and the closure of many businesses.
