Origins of the name

The name of this municipality is still a subject of debates and multiple theories, but the most followed one is that the village, just like the ancient city of Terina, was sandwiched between two rivers, Grande and Rivale (now called Ocinaro and Savuto), and was destroyed by the Saracens around the year one thousand. Therefore, the surviving inhabitants of Terina who had escaped the massacre sought refuge in this place and called it Nocera Terinese, which comes from the Greek word ''neos'' (new) and ''kairos'' (home/residence). The name thus recalls the desire to have a new place to live in and begin life anew following the destruction of the ancient city.

The Pietra della Nave

Among the names in the territory of Nocera Terinese, one can find Pietra della Nave, and its name has its origins in a document from Frederick II of 1240. Being a port city, Terina had a safe harbor where ships could dock. The Pietra della Nave was a rock that served as a reference point for sailors as it indicated the safe harbor. Even today, the reference to Pietra della Nave can be found within the administrative district of the Municipality.

Marina di Nocera Terinese

Separated from the main nucleus is Marina di Nocera Terinese, an oasis on the Calabrian coast where the Savuto River flows into the Tyrrhenian Sea. A charming seaside resort that offers wide golden sand beaches and crystal-clear waters to enjoy a well-deserved rest under the Calabrian sun. The ideal place to spend an unforgettable summer with family and friends.

Conclusions

Overall, Nocera Terinese is a magical place that will not disappoint your expectations. You can enjoy spectacular panoramic views, be enchanted by ancient legends about the city dating back to the Roman era, and experience Calabrian authenticity. Do not hesitate to visit the village and its coast, where every corner encapsulates the soul and tradition of the Calabrians!
