Turin has a two-thousand-year history and was probably founded near its present location, around the 3rd century BC, by the Taurini, and later transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name "Iulia Augusta Taurinorum" in the 1st century BC. After the Ostrogothic domination, it became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin, and then passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy in the 11th century. In 1861 Turin was the first capital city of the Kingdom of Italy.

Geography

Turin is located in the plain between the rivers Stura di Lanzo, the Sangone, and the Po. The latter runs through the city from south to north and the city faces the mouth of some alpine valleys such as Val di Susa, Valli di Lanzo, and Val Sangone.

In addition, the territory of Turin also hosts areas and buildings included in two UNESCO protected sites: some palaces and areas belonging to the network of Savoy Residences in Piedmont (World Heritage Site), and the Po Hills area (Biosphere Reserve).
