Messina Province becomes Messina Metropolitan City
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Messina Province, now known as Messina Metropolitan City. Messina Province was an administrative entity until August 2015, when the regional law of August 4th decided to replace it with the new metropolitan city.
History
Messina Province was created when Sicily passed from the Kingdom of Two Sicilies to the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. After World War II, the Sicilian special statute of 1946 abolished the old provinces, but Messina Province was reconstituted with the regional law of 1963. In 1986, all the provincial districts of the island were abolished and replaced by free municipal consortia, called regional provinces. However, this did not bring any changes to the provincial territory.
Municipalities
Messina Province included many municipalities, in the northeastern area of the island facing the sea. Among these we can mention Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, Castroreale, Milazzo, Taormina, and many others. Although Messina Province no longer exists, most of these municipalities are still there, as part of Messina Metropolitan City.
