A brief overview of the province of Enna

Dear friends, today I want to talk to you about the province of Enna, located in central Sicily. It covers an area of 2,574.7 km² and included 20 municipalities, but in 2015 it was abolished and replaced by the Enna free municipal consortium.

History

The province of Enna was established in 1927 and included the territory of the discontinued districts of Nicosia (previously in the province of Catania) and Piazza Armerina, separated from the province of Caltanissetta. The capital was initially Castrogiovanni, but was renamed Enna in December of the same year. In 1946, the Sicilian provinces were abolished but were then reconstituted in 1963 to become regional provinces in 1986.

On March 28, 2014, the suppression of the Sicilian regional provinces was envisaged, replaced by nine free municipal consortia and three metropolitan areas. The regional province of Enna was abolished and replaced by the Enna free municipal consortium in compliance with the regional law of March 24, 2014.
