History

The history of Nimis dates back to the barbarian invasions, when there were strongholds in the area, including the well-known "Castrum Nemas" mentioned by Paolo Diacono in his Historia Langobardorum. During World War II, the municipality was involved in the activities of the Friulian Italian Resistance, with the participation of the Garibaldi Brigades and the Osoppo Brigades. Unfortunately, the village was set on fire by the SS to prevent partisan uprisings. On August 24, 1944, the Torlano di Nimis Massacre occurred, in which 33 civilians, including women and children, were killed. The investigation file was buried and not found until 1994. In 1976, the municipality was also hit by an earthquake that caused a huge amount of damage.

Wine

One thing that Nimis is known for throughout Friuli is its wine. In the small village, there are many wineries and vineyards, and in the Ramandolo fraction, the eponymous high-quality wine is produced. If you are passionate about oenology, I recommend you visit this place to taste its precious wine!

Monuments and places of interest

Although it is a small municipality, Nimis is rich in monuments and places of interest. Among these are the Church of Saints Gervasio and Protasio, built in the fourteenth century, the Church of the Madonna delle Pianelle dating back to 1476, the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, the Church of the Holy Trinity, the Church of San Mauro Abate, the Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Church of San Giorgio, the Cergneu Castle, the Villanova Caves, the Wineries and Vineyards of the DOCG Ramandolo area, the Pre-Oreak Caves, and the Osteria "Da Ridolf," present in Nimis for over 100 years.

Society

The municipality of Nimis has experienced a demographic decline in recent years, but the remaining population is mainly composed of Friulian speakers. Under the resolution no.2680 of August 3, 2001 of the Council of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, the Municipality is included in the list of Italian municipalities of Friulian language for the purposes of the application of Law 482/99, Regional Law 15/96, and Regional Law 29/2007. Although Friulian is in regression, some mountain fractions such as Cergneu Superiore/Černjeja, Cergneu Inferiore/Dolenjena, Monteprato/Karnica, and Chialminis/Vizont continue to use the Slovenian dialect, which is protected under Law 38/2001.

In summary, Nimis is a beautiful municipality that deserves a visit for its natural beauty and historical and cultural wonders. I hope this article has provided you with a complete overview of the main features of this gem of Friuli!
