With its 3668 inhabitants, Nibionno is located on the border with the provinces of Como, Monza and the Brianza. But are you ready to discover the history and curiosities of this enchanting place?

History

The territory of Nibionno has been inhabited for millions of years. During archaeological excavations, some prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements dating back thousands of years were found in Gaggio. Even the Roman people passed through these areas: near the Lambro river was the Taverna di Tagiago, now destroyed, and the Masso avello, an ancient necropolis located near the village of Mongodio.

Nibionno was first mentioned in 848 as "Nebioni"; at that time, it was part of the Pieve d'Incino, a rural administrative district. In the thirteenth century, the churches of San Protaso in Nibionno and San Fedele in Tabiago were built, replaced in the sixteenth century by the church of San Simone and San Giuda. It was during the same period that the Tabiago castle was built, whose semaphoric tower is the only testimony that remains.

In 1440 the Squadra di Nibionno was born, which lasted until the eighteenth century. Initially entrusted to Luigi Dal Verme, in 1537 it passed to the Sfrondati and reached the municipalities of the Squadra dei Mauri on the shores of Lake Pusiano. The Sfondrati administered the Squadra until 1788. In 1660, Cibrone had to undergo the invasion of a group of barbarians from Abruzzo, with whom he eventually founded the locality of Cibruzzo.
