Origins of the name
The name Niardo probably derives from the term "warda", preceded by the adjective "nova". However, there is also the hypothesis that it may have Germanic origins, perhaps from the name "Niward".
History
Niardo has a history dating back to at least the 12th century, with a fight for the possession of Mount Stabio between this town and Breno. Over the centuries, Niardo has been influenced by various powers, including Venice, France, and Spain. In fact, many buildings in Niardo still have traces of Spanish architecture. In 1859, after the Piedmontese victory in the Battle of Solferino and San Martino, Niardo became part of the Kingdom of Italy. In 1987, the town was hit by a severe flood, which caused the death of two people.
Ancient originators and feudal lords
The "Ancient Originators" of Niardo were the Bondioni, Poli, Jore (now disappeared), and Calzoni families. In 1374, the Bishop of Brescia invested Milino Adami of Niardo with the rights of tithe in the territories of the town. Other local feudal lords were then the Nobili and Bondioni families.
Symbols
The coat of arms of Niardo represents the patron saint, St. Obizio, born in Niardo in 1150. The town's gonfalon is blue.
