Nesso on Lake Como: history and natural beauty

Origins of the name

The name Nesso has Celtic origins and means "mooring". Other scholars suggest that the name may be linked to the deity "Ness", protector of waters.

History

The first traces of human presence in the territory of Nesso date back to the Neolithic Age, when an axe and an engraved stone were discovered. The first mention of the inhabited nucleus dates back to 951 and is part of a privilege granted to the Senator Monastery of Pavia by Berengario II d'Ivrea. In 1161, Federico Barbarossa confirmed this privilege.

The Nesso parish, a small rural church, was mentioned in a swapping act in the 11th century, but the real Christianization of Nesso took place later. In fact, the pastoral visit of Francesco Bonesana cites the ancient tradition according to which the parish of Santi Pietro e Paolo was founded by Ermagora and Fortunato d'Aquileia. It was only in 1062 that the Diocese of Como appointed the first bishop of Nesso, Rainaldo. His body was found under the floor of the ancient church where he used to reside. In 1095, Pope Urban II visited the municipality to pay homage to Rainaldo. The ten-year war of the 12th century saw Nesso aligning with the Milanese faction. The town was attacked and destroyed by the Como forces, including the Castello fortress.

Conclusions

Nesso is a municipality with an ancient history and incredible natural beauty. The Nesso Ravine waterfall is one of the most surprising wonders in the area. You can spend a few days in this charming municipality of Lake Como to enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature without sacrificing the culture and history of the place.
