Nerviano

Nerviano: the city and its territory

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about a beautiful town located about 12 kilometers northwest of the metropolitan city of Milan: Nerviano. The territory of Nerviano is crossed by the Olona river, the Bozzente stream and the Villoresi canal. These waterways, used in the past for cultivation, cause several problems today, mainly due to the anthropization of the area. However, it cannot be denied that the presence of water makes the territory of Nerviano particularly suggestive.

Nerviano in the past

The history of Nerviano is very ancient and dates back to Roman times, when the town was crossed by the Severian Augusta road, the road that connected Milan to Lake Maggiore. Later, in the Middle Ages, Nerviano became one of the most important cities of the Pieve di Nerviano in the Milan countryside, composed of many churches and subject to the jurisdiction of the "prepositus". Thanks to its strategic position, the town was also involved in important historical events such as the fight against Frederick Barbarossa and then against the Torriani and Visconti families.

In addition, Nerviano is famous for its market, which has been held since 1158, and which constitutes an important point of reference for the inhabitants of the area.

Nerviano and art

Nerviano is not only history and commerce, but also art. In the territory, you can admire several contemporary works of art, such as the sculptural group "La Stazione del lutto" by Arnaldo Pomodoro, located near the town's train station. Furthermore, every year the contemporary art exhibition "Nervi in Arte" takes place, involving many Italian and foreign artists.
