Corte Franca: a picturesque town in the heart of Franciacorta

Corte Franca is a picturesque town located in the beautiful region of Franciacorta in Lombardy. With a population of approximately 7,141, the town is situated just a few steps from Lake Iseo and includes the hamlets of Borgonato, Colombaro, Nigoline, and Timoline. Corte Franca was established in 1928 through the merger of these four hamlets, which played an important role in the history of the surrounding area.

A land rich in history

The area where the town of Corte Franca developed has been inhabited since ancient times. During excavations for peat extraction in the current Sebino d'Iseo Natural Reserve, evidence of the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods, such as arrowheads and daggers, were found. In addition, weapons from the Copper and Iron Ages were also discovered. Moreover, a Gallo-Roman necropolis was discovered in Timoline.

Corte Franca: history, gastronomy, twinning and natural beauty in Franciacorta.

Medieval history

During the Early Middle Ages, the first inhabited nuclei began to develop, which later evolved into the hamlets of Borgonato, Nigoline, and Timoline. During the Carolingian period, these three hamlets were mentioned in some documents from the Church of San Salvatore in Brescia. Over the centuries, the four hamlets have left numerous architectural traces that can still be admired today.

Administrative evolution

From the fifteenth century to the present day, the four municipalities that make up Corte Franca have followed the administrative history of Brescia. Before the Republic of Venice until the beginning of the nineteenth century, the four municipalities were part of a continuous alternation of powers and political and administrative regimes. In 1859, after the Second Italian War of Independence, Lombardy was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia, which later gave birth to the united Italy.

Twinning with Aberdour

On September 30, 2003, the Municipal Council of Corte Franca established twinning with Aberdour, a historic and picturesque town located on the northeast coast of Scotland. The two towns have a strong cultural and historical bond, as well as an important winemaking tradition.

Gastronomy

Franciacorta is famous for its fine wines, but not only that. The local cuisine is also a true gastronomic treasure, with dishes such as Bergamo-style casoncelli, bacon trofie, and taragna polenta. Among the typical products of the area are cheeses, cured meats, and homemade bread.

Corte Franca: an experience to live

The beauty of Corte Franca, with its breathtaking landscapes and rich history, makes it an ideal destination for a day trip. Moreover, the twinning with Aberdour provides a unique opportunity to discover Scottish culture and its historical and artistic heritage. A visit to Corte Franca and Franciacorta is an experience not to be missed for those who love nature, culture, and authentic flavors.
