The history of Nera Montoro

Nera Montoro takes its name from the nearby Nera River and Montoro, a small village located nearby. The village was established in the early 1930s as a company town for the employees of the electrochemical plant owned by Terni Industrie Chimiche. The goal was to create a self-sufficient and healthy community away from the city, where workers could cultivate their own gardens to supplement their income. The village developed as a sort of garden-city and has remained mostly intact to this day. After World War II, the village underwent some reconstructions.

Economy and events

The village's economy is closely linked to the electrochemical plant owned by Terni Industrie Chimiche, which produces sodium chlorate and synthetic ammonia. In 2006, the company was acquired by Norwegian Yara, prompting concerns about downsizing of the plant and job losses. Nera Montoro is also home to a modern cogeneration plant with an electric capacity of about 50 MW. Additionally, the area hosts the national plant of Alcantara, which produces synthetic material mainly used in furniture and upholstery, and another plant of Bayer, which produces Makrolon plastic sheets.

In mid-June, Nera Montoro hosts a unique festival, the zucchini flower festival, eagerly awaited by the whole community.
