The history of Moricone

Moricone's historical origin is quite controversial. Many argue that the name derives from Monte Morrecone, on top of which the original nucleus of the Castello was formed. According to others, however, the roots of Moricone date back to the ancient Sabine city of Regillum. A third hypothesis, instead, is based on the construction of a city by Abbot Berardo III, according to an old chronicle of the Abbey of Farfa.

The town has an ancient history: in fact, the first historical mention referring to Moricone dates back to the 13th century. In 1611, Moricone passed into the hands of Prince Marcantonio Borghese, who invested in significant urban works that still have a strong presence in the face of the city. From 1871, the Torlonia took over from the Borghese, followed by the Sforza.

The monuments and places of interest in Moricone

Moricone is rich in religious architectures, among which stands out the Chiesa Vecchia in Piazza Ranne, of Romanesque imprint. Until 1820 it was the Parish of Moricone, today it is no longer used for worship and has been allocated to cultural and social activities. The Parish Church, wanted by Sister Colomba, was built because the Old Church was no longer able to accommodate all the faithful of the town. The Parish Church is also located on the main square and is one of the most important monuments in Moricone.

Conclusions

Moricone is a very suggestive town, immersed in nature and with an ancient history. If you find yourself in the vicinity of Rome, I recommend you visit this municipality to discover the beauty of its monuments and the goodness of local cuisine. Moricone is waiting for you!
