Muros

Welcome to Muros, a municipality in the province of Sassari

Hello everyone! Today I want to introduce you to Muros, a small municipality in the province of Sassari in Sardinia with a population of only 822 inhabitants. The name, which means "walls" in Italian, is not very romantic, but don't worry, Muros is a charming place full of history and culture.

The history of Muros

The origins of Muros are uncertain, but in the Middle Ages it was part of the Giudicato of Torres and the curatoria of Figulinas. After passing under the lordship of the Doria and Malaspina families, Muros passed under Aragonese rule in 1350 and became a fief granted to the baronial family of Martinez. Over time, this family was elevated to the rank of marquises with the Marquis of Montemuros. The village was redeemed in 1839 with the suppression of the feudal system. In the vicinity of the settlement there are also the ruins of an ancient village called Tatareddu, with the foundations of a large building, probably the marquis palace.

The symbols of Muros

The coat of arms and the gonfalon of Muros were granted in 1988. The coat of arms is composed of a Sannite shield bordered in gold, with three green mountains on a blue field. In the center of the shield is a silver hammer. The gonfalon is a banner divided into white and blue.

Monuments and places of interest in Muros

Muros is rich in monuments and places of interest. The church of Santi Gavino Proto and Gianuario was built in the second half of the 17th century and is a masterpiece of religious architecture. The Casa Martinez di Montemuros and the public fountain are also important testimonies to the history of Muros. Among the archaeological sites, we find the Nuraghe Sa Turricula, the tomb of giants of Monte Simeone and the hypogeum of Rocca Ruja.

Society in Muros

The population of Muros has been steadily growing in recent years, although the municipality is still small and quiet. The Sardinian language spoken in Muros is the northern Logudorese.
