Discovering Mura

Mura or Mura di Savallo is a small town in the Lombardy region of Brescia. With just 773 inhabitants, it is an ideal place for those seeking peace and tranquility away from the hustle and bustle of big cities. The town is crossed by the waters of the Tovere stream and bounded by a dam that forms Lake Bongi, a small artificial basin perfect for outdoor walks and picnics. The town is part of the Mountain Community of Valle Sabbia, one of the most fascinating mountainous areas of Lombardy. The town's symbol, a coat of arms with interlaced symbols of justice, dates back to the time of the Napoleonic Italian Republic (1802-1805). The focal point of the town's social life is the Church of St. John the Baptist, located just a few steps from the historic center, which houses important works of art.

Legends of Mura

One of the most evocative stories related to the history of Mura concerns the passage of Pope Alexander III in Valle Sabbia in 1166. According to legend, the pope, exiled from Rome and pursued by the forces of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa, found refuge in the mountains of Lombardy, where he was welcomed by the locals. Following his passage in Valle Sabbia, the pontiff would have established the Feast of Forgiveness, an ecclesiastical ceremony that consists of the reconciliation of sins and is still celebrated in Valvestino every last Sunday of the month. Although the veracity of this legend has been questioned by historians, its evocative atmosphere has contributed to making Mura a magical and fascinating place.
