History
The territory of Mottalciata dates back to the times of the Roman Empire, as evidenced by a small altar dating back to the 2nd century preserved in the museum of the Biella area. However, the locality was already inhabited by a pre-Celtic village. An important event in the history of Mottalciata dates back to May 17, 1944, when seventeen Garibaldi Brigades were shot by the Italian Social Republic militiamen of the Tagliamento Legion near the San Vincenzo cemetery.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the Vercelli family of Alciati ("barry of azure and argent") is the symbol of the municipality of Mottalciata. The Alciati were lords of Mottalciata.
Monuments and places of interest
If you visit Mottalciata, you can't miss the oriental nature reserve of the Baragge, an area of great natural beauty. In addition, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Church of San Vincenzo are worth a visit. The Church of San Vincenzo dates back to the 12th century but was almost completely rebuilt in the 18th century, while the bell tower is still the original one, probably dating back to the 12th century and built in Romanesque style. Among other attractions, there are the Church of San Silvestro (18th century) and the Castle-ringed, located on the hill above the current municipal center and dating back to the 14th century.
