Origins of the name

Mosciano Sant'Angelo was previously known as ''muscianë'' in the local dialect. The toponym dates back to 897 and derives from the Latin anthroponym ''Mus(s)ius'' with the estate suffix ''-ānus''. The addition of Sant'Angelo was decided to solve toponymic homonymy problems.

The city has a rich and fascinating history, dating back to the high Middle Ages. Already in 897, Mosciano Sant'Angelo was referred to as ''RES MUSIANO''. The city was founded based on the Benedictine Monastery of S.Angelo in Musiano, dedicated to St. Michael the Archangel.

In the fortified village of the Monastery, which was subjected to the dominion of the Acquaviva family at the end of the 14th century, there is the Acquaviva Tower, built in 1397. A fraction of Mosciano Sant'Angelo is Montone, a suggestive medieval village that hosts the cultural festival "Montone between the sun and the moon" annually since 1994.
