Moscazzano

Welcome to Moscazzano!

Hello everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Moscazzano, a municipality in the province of Cremona, in Lombardy, famous for its history and traditions.

Ancient history

The origins of the settlement date back to Late Antiquity when there was still the large marshy lake called Lake Gerundo. To escape the violence and dangers caused by the Lombard invasion of Italy in 568, many people gathered in the place where Crema now stands, a position considered safe because it was surrounded by the lake and marshy areas. In the center of this water area, there was a large stretch of dry land called Insula Fulcheria.

Moscazzano: History, Traditions, and Places to Visit.

Feudal domain

After the Lombard dominion, the territory of Cremona flowed into the Holy Roman Empire and was controlled by great feudal lords such as the Gisalbertini family of Bergamo. Under the reign of Henry III the Black, Insula Fulcheria was part of the vast domains of the Marquis Bonifacio di Canossa, later passed to the Bishop of Cremona. Moscazzano followed the fortunes of nearby Crema throughout the Middle Ages, ending up under Venetian rule in 1449.

Modern era

In 1678, an epidemic broke out in Moscazzano, which caused the deaths of many children. Tradition has it that they were buried where the Chapel of the Dead now stands, and indeed, in the 1920s during excavations around the little chapel, many remains of children were found. Moscazzano officially became a Municipality with the fall of the Republic of Venice in 1797. With the fall of the French Empire, Austrian troops entered Crema on April 20, 1814.

Traditions

Moscazzano is famous for its traditions, such as the feast of St. Joseph, the patron saint of the village, celebrated on March 19. During the festival, the statue of the saint is carried in procession and a grand celebration with music, dances and typical food is organized.
