Moruzzo is located on a hill that offers a panoramic view of the plain, the city of Udine, and neighboring towns such as San Daniele del Friuli and Tricesimo. The main square of the village is worth visiting, where there used to be a centuries-old linden tree.

Origin of the name

The name Moruzzo comes from the Latin word “mūrus", which means "wall" with the diminutive suffix "-ūcius", which means "small wall". However, it may also be the Friulian plural of "morùt", which means "small walls".

History and places of interest

Moruzzo has ancient origins and has been inhabited since the Celtic period, as shown by the necropolis discovered in 1897. It is said that there was a Roman castrum in the area. In 1161, the name Moruzzo first appeared in a document. In 1511, the Castle of Moruzzo was looted during the revolt called "Cruel Fat Thursday".

There are several small churches scattered throughout the territory to visit, such as the one dedicated to Santa Eurosia, dating back to 1400, the church dedicated to Saint Michael, located on the top of the hill of the same name, and the Trinity Church, built in 1600 as a noble chapel of the Manin family, canon of the Patriarchal Chapter. Additionally, you can admire the Castle of Brazzacco di Sopra, a well-preserved example of a feudal building from the 15th-16th century.

Finally, Moruzzo's parish church is dedicated to Thomas Aquinas and is a well-known place of worship in the area.
