Mornico al Serio: a beautiful town in the province of Bergamo

Hello everyone! Today I would like to talk to you about a wonderful town in the province of Bergamo called Mornico al Serio, or ''Mürnìch'' in Bergamo dialect. With its 2,878 inhabitants, Mornico al Serio is located in the south-eastern plain of Bergamo and is about 17 kilometers away from the city.

The History of Mornico al Serio

This town has origins dating back to the Roman empire, as evidenced by the burials found along the Francesca road, an ancient Roman road still used today as a modern traffic artery. The first documents attesting to the existence of the town date back to the year 1002, in the Middle Ages.

During this time, Mornico al Serio only marginally suffered from the struggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines that were taking place in neighboring towns. In 1220 it was placed under the municipal protection of Bergamo until the beginning of the 15th century, when it came under the dominion of the Republic of Venice.

Mornico al Serio: History, Monuments, and Traditions of a Town in Bergamo

Symbols of Mornico al Serio

The coat of arms of the town was recognized by D.P.C.M. of September 24, 1955. The gonfalon, on the other hand, granted by D.P.R. of January 7, 1956, is a blue cloth.

Monuments and Places of Interest

Mornico al Serio is a town rich in noteworthy buildings, first of all the Perini Palace, the municipal seat, which has a beautiful portico dating back to the 17th century.

Villa Terzi-Dolci has Tuscan-style columns and the Alessandri-Biasca Palace has an internal park and a small church.

The Church of Sant'Andrea, dedicated to the apostle Andrew, was built during the 20th century and is in Baroque style. Alongside it is the old parish church of the Beata Vergine Addolorata, dating back to the 11th century, with an interesting presbytery in Romanesque style and frescoes executed in the 15th century by Maffiolo da Cazzano.

Also interesting are the two churches located in the open countryside: the first, dedicated to Santa Valeria, dates back to the 16th century, while the second, entitled to San Rocco, has an unmistakable octagonal section plan. In this last church there is a painting by Bartolomeo Cabrini, dated and signed in 1495.

Events in Mornico al Serio

Every year, during the period from late August to early September, a non-competitive foot relay race of several days' duration is organized by the parish from various places of religious interest such as Rome, Assisi, Trento, Padua and Turin.

The most significant festival linked to peasant/popular traditions that has been held every year since 1981 is the festival in the yard.

The administration of the town is entrusted to the mayor and the municipal council.
