Rendinara: A medieval village between nature and tradition.

The origins of Rendinara's name

The etymology of the name Rendinara is uncertain, but there are several theories on the subject. The first hypothesis links the name to the figure of the Hirundo rustica, for assonance with the name, and considering that the bird is certainly the one depicted on the column capital belonging to the ancient coat of arms of the village. Other theories, on the other hand, are linked to the figure of the Reziario (or retiarii) gladiators, from which the locality would have acquired the name "Retiaria", and to the historical region of Raetia. In some historical documents, the village also appears with the toponyms "Rodemaram" and "Rendinaria".

The history of Rendinara

In the Middle Ages, the village was also called "Retiaria" and in 1806, with the abolition of feudalism, it was declared a "reunited municipality" and included, until 1816, in the central one of Balsorano together with San Giovanni Valle Roveto and Roccavivi. After the Marsica earthquake of 1915, which caused the death of 72 people, much of the historic center was restored. Today, Rendinara is considered a charming village, thanks to its ancient architecture and local traditions.

The patron saints of Rendinara

The patron saint of Rendinara is John the Baptist, while the population is also devoted to Saint Ermete, a hermit and exorcist whose sanctity was proclaimed in the form of vox populi, vox Dei. This saint, originally from Bologna, is celebrated annually on July 9, a date linked to the first recognition of his remains, kept inside the church of San Giovanni Battista. In addition, the parish, built in the 1960s, is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
