Morino

The Municipality of Morino: a place immersed in the nature of Abruzzo

If you're looking for a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, the Municipality of Morino might be just what you're looking for. Located in Abruzzo, this small Municipality has just 1303 inhabitants and is immersed in the beautiful nature of the Roveto valley. Its original nucleus, Morino Vecchio, was destroyed by the earthquake of Marsica in 1915, but the modern urban center has developed on the eastern slope of the Ernici Mountains.

A particular geography

The Municipality of Morino covers an area of 21.70 km² and is characterized by the presence of different fractions, including Brecciose, Grancia (Morino), and Rendinara. Moreover, within the municipal territory, there is also the guided natural reserve Zompo lo Schioppo, which represents a real natural oasis.

What does the name Morino mean?

The toponym "Morino" seems to be linked to the presence of rocks and boulders in the surrounding area. However, in some ancient documents, the town was also called "Moreno," which is why a possible association with the word "morena" has been hypothesized.

The history of Morino

The history of Morino dates back to the XI-XII century when the old village was built on the remains of a Vicus Marsi. Over the centuries, the town had several vicissitudes, including the status of a fief of Ruggero, count of Albe, in 1173. In the sixteenth century, the sepulchral church of San Rocco was inaugurated, and that of Santa Maria Bambina was expanded, while in the eighteenth century, several socio-economic projects were carried out, such as the Bourbon ironworks. Finally, in 1831, the municipal administration was established with the aggregation of Rendinara.

The earthquake of 1915

The Marsica earthquake of 1915 was one of the most dramatic events in the history of Morino. The earthquake caused the death of 113 people and completely destroyed the old village, which was abandoned by the survivors to be rebuilt downstream.

In general, the Municipality of Morino represents a perfect place for those looking for peace and contact with the nature of Abruzzo. Whether you want to take a walk in the beautiful guided natural reserve Zompo lo Schioppo or discover the history and culture of the area, Morino is an ideal destination for a regenerating weekend.
