Hello friends, today I want to introduce you to the Municipality of Moricone, a small town located in the Tiber Valley about 42 km from Rome. With its 2514 inhabitants, it is part of the metropolitan city of Rome Capital in Lazio.

Moricone, the unknown treasure of the Roman countryside.

Let's discover the physical geography of Moricone

Territory

Moricone is located on the western foothills of the Lucretili Mountains, at an altitude of 296 meters, near Mount Gennaro (1272 m) and Mount Pellecchia (1368 m). The municipality is surrounded by the Regional Natural Park of the Lucretili Mountains and also includes the mountain bastion of Mount Matano.

Climate

Moricone is located in an area classified as D and has a rather mild climate. In 2012 it recorded a GR/G.

Morticone and its history

The name Moricone derives from Mount Morrecone, on whose peak the original nucleus of the Castle was constituted. However, the historical origin of the village is controversial. According to some sources, the original castle arose in the area of ancient Orvinium, but this hypothesis has been rejected by experts such as Antonio Nibby. Others argue that the castle was built on Regillum, one of the ancient Sabine cities of Latium vetus. A third hypothesis, instead, advanced by Silvestrelli, is based on an old chronicle of the Abbey of Farfa, which tells of the construction of a city by Abbot Berardo III, who died in 1119. Finally, there is the possibility that the village arose in correspondence with ancient Antemnae, one of the thirty colonies founded by the ancient Latins in the Sabine territory, as suggested by the books of Titus Livy.

The first historical citation referring to the village dates back to the thirteenth century. In an act of 1272, there is talk of a castle built on Mount Morrecone by the family of the counts of Palombara Sabina, the "De Palumba". Subsequently, the castle passed to the Savelli, who added it to their fiefs. In 1611, the property passed to Prince Marcantonio Borghese for the sum of 100,000 scudi plus half of the castle of Pietraforte. Prince Borghese, having acquired the inhabited area, carried out many important works that transformed the face of Moricone.

Since 1871, the Torlonia family took over from the Borghese family, thanks to a marriage bond. Finally, a few decades ago, the properties were passed on to the Sforza family and then sold and divided among the local residents.

The monuments and places of interest in Moricone

Religious architectures

One of the most significant points of interest in the village is the old Church in Piazza Ranne with a Romanesque imprint. Until around 1820, it was the Parish Church of Moricone. Today, it is no longer used for worship and is used for social and cultural events. Another notable church is the Parish Church, wanted by Sister Colomba because the old church was no longer suitable for the growing village. It is located in the main square of the village and represents an important reference point for the community.

Moricone, with its history and monuments, represents an interesting destination for all those who want to discover the beauties of the Roman countryside. The village, in fact, offers numerous natural and cultural paths, which allow you to better understand the traditions and culture of this part of Lazio.
