Discovering Desco: a historic fraction of Morbegno

Hi everyone! Today I want to introduce you to Desco, a beautiful fraction located to the east of Morbegno, at the foot of Colmen. With a population of only 83 inhabitants, Desco is a quiet and secluded place that deserves to be discovered. The community of Desco has ancient origins, dating back to at least 1400, when between Desco and Paniga there were no less than 17 Fuoco (an ancient measure of demography). Today I want to take you on a discovery of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, a very ancient place of worship and of great artistic value.

The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena

The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena is the parish of Desco and is dedicated to the saint who would have witnessed the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. Originally, on this site was a chapel dedicated to Santa Maria di Magdala, which was painted in 1531 by Giovanni Crosetto di Cadelpicco. The parish church was subsequently built, renovated and expanded in 1922, and is one of the most beautiful and evocative places in Desco.

The facade and interior of the Church

The simple gabled facade of the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena is adorned with Gothic arches and a beautiful rose window, next to which is a small but sturdy bell tower. Inside the church, we find a nave covered by a dome, a deep presbytery and two side chapels. Among the noteworthy elements inside the church, we find the marble font dated 1596 and the two paintings on the counter-facade, recently restored. The two paintings depict the crucifixion (16th century) and the resurrection of Lazarus (17th century) and are truly beautiful to see.

The creation of the Parish of Desco

The parish of Desco was established on September 12, 1922 by Bishop Alfonso Archi, who separated it from the parish of Caspano. Since then, the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena has been the center of the religious life of the community of Desco, a point of reference for the faithful and a place of peace and prayer.

Conclusion

Desco is a wonderful fraction, rich in history and beauty. The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and evocative places in Desco, an artistic gem that must be visited. If you are in the area, I recommend you to visit Desco and its church to discover the beauty of this enchanted place.
