Monzambano
Welcome to Monzambano, the hilly town in Lombardy
Monzambano is a small town located in the province of Mantua, in Lombardy, with a population of around 4877 inhabitants. We are in one of the most picturesque areas of northern Italy as our territory is predominantly hilly, located between the Morena to the south of Lake Garda, in the Upper Mantovano. In this text, we will take you on a journey to discover our town, with many curiosities about our geography and history, as well as tourist attractions.
Physical Geography
Territory
Monzambano's territory is characterized by a great variety of hilly landscapes, with a minimum altitude of 46 meters above sea level up to a maximum of 610 meters above sea level, the highest point in the Castellaro Lagusello fraction. The hills of the municipality are mostly composed of morainic amphitheaters, i.e., hills formed by the action of ice during the glacial era. The hilly area is perfect for enjoying the natural beauty of our town, among parks such as the Mincio park and the Castellaro Lagusello Morainic Complex Nature Reserve.
Hydrography
Monzambano is crossed by the Mincio River and its tributaries, such as the Fratta River, which flows south of the town, and the Volò River, to the east. The territory was elected by the Lombardy Region as a "Regional Park of Mincio" since 1984, precisely to safeguard the naturalistic value of the river and its banks.
Climate
The climate of Monzambano is typical of hilly areas, with fairly hot summers and rather cold winters. The average annual temperature is 13.8°C. The best time to visit the town is during spring and autumn, when temperatures are milder, and landscapes are even more enchanting.
Origins of the name
The name of Monzambano derives from the Latin "mons" (mountain) and "Zambanus," a proper name. Today, the name of the town is also known in our dialect as "Mosambà." The first documents mentioning our town date back to the end of the thirteenth century when it was part of the Veronese defensive system.
History
Monzambano is an ancient municipality and has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the findings of pile-dwelling villages in the Castellaro Lagusello fraction. The town was part of the Veronese defensive system to the east, with castles placed in strategically tactical positions. When Verona came under the influence of the Republic of Venice, Monzambano followed its fate. It remained under the Serenissima until 1797, the year of Napoleon Bonaparte's descent in Italy. With the Campoformio Treaty, Monzambano became part of the Cisalpine Republic, and from then on, its history was linked to that of Mantua.
Throughout history, the town has played a fundamental role in Italian conflicts. In 1848, Monzambano was the scene of a clash between a Piedmontese division and Austrian forces. During the Third Italian War of Independence, in 1866, the bridge of Monzambano was victoriously defended by General Giuseppe Salvatore Pianell against Austrian attacks.
