Montù Beccaria

Discovering Montù Beccaria

Hello everyone! Today I will talk about Montù Beccaria, an Italian town located in the province of Pavia, in Lombardy.

The history of Montù Beccaria

Montù Beccaria has an ancient history that dates back to the monarchy. In fact, it appears in the diploma of 1164, with which the emperor Frederick Barbarossa granted most of the Oltrepò to the city of Pavia. This document also includes the name of Figaria, which probably corresponds to the current Figale fraction.

In the twelfth century, Montù had a castle that was destroyed by the Piacentini in 1216 in a struggle with the Pavesi. But the castle was later rebuilt and became one of the most important fiefs of the Beccaria. In 1412 the Pieve del Cairo branch of the Beccaria was entrusted with governing the fief of Montù.

In 1591, Count Aureliano, the last of the Beccaria family, died. He left the castle to the Barnabites fathers, who for a long time were the major landowners in the town. The fief, instead, was sold to the Salimbene in 1609, to the Bellone in 1665, and to the Martin in 1786.

The coat of arms of the town consists of three parts. The first part depicts the Castle of Montù Beccaria, the second part refers to viticulture and cereal cultivation, while the third part takes up the Beccaria coat of arms. The gonfalon is a cut flag of azure and red.

The Castle of Montù Beccaria is one of the most important monuments in the town. The building is located on a relief called ''Castellazzo'', in a dominant position on the last reliefs of the hills of the Versa valley.

Society and administration

The town of Montù Beccaria currently has 1,622 inhabitants. Over the years, the population has increased and decreased based on historical events and demographic evolution of the territory. Montù Beccaria, until 2009, was part of the Oltrepò Pavese Mountain Community.
